The Story of Sabores Del Sur

Picture

Sabores Del Sur

 Means "Flavors from the South."

“In order to eat what I craved, I had to make everything myself. I wanted empanadas and alfajores and couldn’t find anything like what we ate at home.” - Chef Guisell

Chef Guisell

Sabores del Sur's Chef Guisell was born in Santiago de Chile. She attended high school in the East Bay when her family moved there on a temporary basis. She went back to Chile with her family but held on to her desire to make a better life for herself, so she decided to return to the Bay Area; “The Land of Opportunity”.

With nothing more than $27 and a dream in her pocket, she moved back to the Bay Area. After several months of searching, she realized the only way to eat her favorite South American dishes was to cook them herself: “In order to eat what I craved, I had to make everything myself. I wanted authentic empanadas and alfajores, but I couldn’t find anything like what we ate back home.” She soon informally started her food business, Sabores del Sur (Flavors from the South), selling her favorite South American foods to friends and family.

Since she was a child cooking next to her grandmother in a small country-kitchen in Chile, Chef Guisell always dreamed of having her own restaurant. Her passion and love for food (and watching others enjoy her creations) drove her to ask for her grandmother’s recipes. She quickly realized she had a hidden talent and love for cooking.

Our Story

In 2004, after more than a year of preparation (research, testing and taking culinary and business classes) Chef Guisell formally opened Sabores del Sur. She immediately began her association with non-profits La Cocina and Women’s Initiative, which provided commercial kitchen space, industry expertise and other resources for her success. Sabores del Sur has since become one of the Bay Area’s favorite South American restaurants and food & catering companies, supporting Fair Trade, Locally Grown and  Buy Local Programs and employing Environmentally Sensitive and “Green” business practices. Sabores del Sur and Chef Guisell support a number of charities and strive to be a positive impact on the community.

Chef Guisell has received an amazing amount of media attention, including articles in Diablo Magazine “Little Bite of Heaven” (May 2006), 7 X 7 Magazine “The Best Cookie on Earth” (June 2007), the San Francisco Chronicle, the Contra Costa Times and El Mensajero. She has also been featured on TV on: Eye on the Bay (Ch. 5), Bay Area People (Ch. 2), Channel 7 News, View by the Bay (Ch. 7), Univision and Channel 14 News.

How do you pronounce "Sabores del Sur"?
                            "Sub"                                    "oar"                        "ace"
Like a yellow submarine      Like a paddle   Like the ace of spades
Now put it all together: Sub-oar-ace = Sabores + del + Sur
Sabores del Sur = Flavors from the South
